Frog Leap

Here's one of my favourite instrumentals, 'Frog Leap' by Mudies All-Stars and an uncredited Ernest Ranglin. My copy's a bit rough, so I apologise in advance. I hope you'll agree that the quality of he music more than makes up for it.

The other side is called 'Dark Shadows' and it's a lovely mellow guitar instrumental on the same rhythm that Jo Jo Bennett used for 'Velvet Mood' (I don't know what the original is).

Update: thanks to the Voice of Reason I now do.  Enjoy:

Sweet Three

Here's an old favourite, the original rhythm  to Mikey Dread's 'Barber Saloon' 'Love The Dread' (thanks VoR). It's 'Not Responsible' by Carlton Patterson & Leroy Brown (I don't know which one). The mix is great, especially on the dub where you get some real impact on the drums.

There are also a couple of versions by Dillinger ('Ah You Me Love' and 'Healing Stream') and Bongo Herman ('Psalms Of Drums'). The next tune is just really sweet, followers of this blog will know that I'm a big fan of Joe White - an artist who never really got the recognition he deserved. 'Pretty Black Girl' was something he cut for Harry Mudie at the start of the seventies, and you can hear that my copy's been played into the ground.

The final tune needs no introduction, one of Horace Andy's very best, and one of the first really big hits to come out of Channel One: 'Girl A Love You'.

Anyway, hope you enjoy.

Stripping The Bone

Today's second tune is an awesome roots instrumental featuring Vin Gordon on the trombone. It's very heavy and has a great Tubbys mix.

The b-side is also great, with Tubby in full effect.  It's done in the same sort of style as those 'Dub Conference' LP's that Harry Mudie put out around the same time.

Music

Hi All,

I've got a couple more tunes for you, and they're nice ones: 'Penny For Your Dub' by U-Roy, and 'Love Without Feeling' by the Heptones.

'Penny For Your Song' was a hit for the Federals in 1967, a bigger hit for their lead singer David Scott in 1971, and an even bigger hit with Scotty's deejay version (yes, David Scott again). U-Roy's version holds its own against the others and the dub version is superb.

'Love Without Feeling' comes on one of Harry Mudie's heaviest rhythms, and there are a lot of great versions to check out. "Theme  From The Gun Court" (one of my favourites), "Spanish Town Rock" and "Lick Dem Face" are all very nice, and Mikey General did a good cut ('Now Is The Time') sometime in nineties.

Anyway, enjoy!
